Nepal

Since the earthquake struck in April 2015 and a subsequent quake followed in May,  Mennonite Central Committee’s partners as well as a small local organization from a trusted pastor have been working against time to deliver immediate humanitarian assistance to rural and remote areas. But the window of opportunity, especially in isolated areas, is rapidly closing as heavy rains often trigger landslides, making travel to these areas much more difficult. They are also looking at longer-term needs and determining ways to address some of the struggles faced by the people in Nepal.

The small local organization has delivered water filters, buckets, tarps and food. Many families from Chaku area of Sindhupalchowk district couldn’t live in their area any longer, many lost everything and now stay in camps. They have a well in the camp but had to walk about half an hour to get drinking water. Buckets and water filters now  help them to at least get clean drinking water.

In late June, through partner Shanti Nepal, MCC delivered metal sheeting to 459 families in the community of Darkha in Dhading district, located in central Nepal. The sheeting is particularly useful because it can be used as temporary roofing and also repurposed for long-term housing. Plans for longer-term response include building earthquake-resistant housing and training local people on improved building techniques.

Donations are still very welcome and needed and can be submitted to the SMM bank account, key word: Nepal.
