Relief Kits 2017

Emergency Aid relief for those in Aleppo. Collection from May 7th – June 18th.

This emergency aid relief drive was successfully closed on June 18th, 2017!

Short summary of the relief drive:

In 2017 the SMM Emergency Aid team organised another relief aid drive for those in need – this time for those living in Aleppo (Syria). Volunteers were called to participate by filling “relief buckets” – plastic buckets filled with hygiene kits, sew quilts and knit socks. The results were overwhelming.

In a short few weeks, the team collected 347 quilts, 162 knit and 56 purchased blankets, 230 sheets, 1141 knit pairs of socks, 502 knit hats, 59 knit sweaters and 1146 buckets. In the area of Muttenz another 8 boxes filled with drawing and notebooks, 10kg playdough, as well as countless toy cars, pencil crayons and dolls.

The relief aid drive would not have been so successful if it were not for the countless hands and hearts involved. For the SMM Emergency Aid team it has been extremely encouraging to be able to work with so many individuals in different communities and congregations and to realise, how much we can count on others for help contribute to making these events so successful.

Emergency Aid in the Middle East 2015

The collection for this relief operation was successfully closed on November 8th 2015. You are still welcome to contribute financially to the cause by donating to the following account:
Postkonto SMM: 30-649185-9 (note: Sammelaktion 2015)
IBAN CH68 0900 0000 3064 9185 9

We would like to thank all the congregations, families and individuals who participated in the relief operation to aid refugees in the Near and Middle East. The solidarity and willingness to help has been overwhelming. The number of kits collected has reached an impressive total of 1422!

The current reports on television and the internet caused many Europeans to contemplate how we can help. Communities and individuals have praised this practical method of response and are thankful that they and their families are able to do something concrete to help others in need.

In one town, all churches in the community came together to support the cause, including a Catholic priest who advertised the relief operation with a kit in his hand. Along with Switzerland, the Mennonite congregations from France, Germany and Holland are also quite pleased with the result of their operations.

The collected goods were packed in Switzerland with the help of volunteers into one large shipping container (12m x 2.5m x 2.9m) on November 19th. On November 21st they were sent by ship to Rotterdam, before departing for Syria on December 1st. The container arrived in the Syrian harbour Latakia on December 22nd, where it was transported to Damascus. As of January 30th the authorities have given the green light to have the goods be released. The Syrian Orthodox Church, along with MCC, will be responsible to distribute to those in need.

Short-term Opportunities: Other

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT, see cpt.org) sends short-term (7-14 day) peacemaker delegations into crisis settings around the world. These delegations  seek to encourage individuals and communities experiencing violence, challenge violations of human rights, promote active nonviolence as a means of settling disputes, support movement towards nonviolent social change through listening, public witness, prayer vigils, dialogue, and reduce violence through an international presence in affected communities/areas. The German Mennonite Peace Committee (DMFK), in cooperation with CPT, supports local groups in border countries, where refugees seek shelter, a new future and hope. See more at dmfk.de, cptgreece.wordpress.com. SMM helps to connect with both CPT and DMFK.

Zurich

In March 2015 SMM presented the following ideas to the Mennonite delegates:

  • A small team of gifted persons could live and work in Zurich, starting a social project that fit with the need in Zurich. Theological  and historical Know-how, Anabaptist spirituality, compassion, being people`persons and networkers will help them to connect with tourists, students, inhabitants and interested poeple.
  • Connecting Anabaptist history with daily life, offering Anabaptist tours might offer opportunities to serve in Zurich.
  • Offering a place for Anabaptist spirituality.

We are still searching for persons willing to invest in the city, working as “tentmakers” and connecting people, touching them with God`s love. Please contact SMM for further information.
